  5. Getting around

Day 1: Gaudi and the Eixample

Start your first morning at the Sagrada Familia before the crowds arrive. Book a timed entry for 9am and you will have the interior largely to yourself. The afternoon is perfectly spent at Casa Batllo on Passeig de Gracia. In the evening, walk the length of Passeig de Gracia to admire the illuminated facades and choose a restaurant in the Eixample for dinner.

Day 2: Gothic Quarter and the Waterfront

The Gothic Quarter is best explored in the morning before the tour groups arrive. Wander the narrow medieval streets around the Barcelona Cathedral, find the remains of the Roman city wall, and cross into the El Born neighbourhood for coffee. In the afternoon, head down to Barceloneta beach and the Port Olympic. The evening is ideal for a seafood dinner at one of the harbourside restaurants.

Day 3: Park Guell and Montjuic

Book timed entry for Park Guell at 10am. After the park, take the cable car from Parc de Montjuic for views over the city and the sea. The Fundacio Joan Miro is one of the best modern art museums in Spain and is worth two hours of your afternoon. End with tapas in the Gracia neighbourhood, which has more of a local feel than the tourist centre.

What to book in advance

Skip-the-line tickets for the Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, and Casa Batllo all sell out days or weeks in advance in peak season. Book these before anything else.

Getting around

The T-Casual 10-trip metro card covers all public transport in zones 1 and 2 and is the best value for a short stay. Most major attractions are within walking distance of each other or a short metro ride.
