Who was Antoni Gaudi?

Antoni Gaudi (1852 to 1926) is the most celebrated architect in Spanish history and arguably the most original architect who ever lived. His buildings defy easy categorisation: they draw on Gothic, Moorish, and natural forms to create something entirely new. Six of his works in Barcelona are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Sagrada Familia

Gaudi's masterpiece and the most visited monument in Spain. He devoted the last 43 years of his life to it and was buried in its crypt when he died in 1926. The basilica is still under construction but is now more than 70 percent complete.

Park Guell

Originally planned as a private garden city for 60 families, only two houses were ever built. The project was abandoned in 1914 and the city of Barcelona eventually took over the land. The mosaic terrace, dragon staircase, and Hypostyle Room are among the most photographed spots in Barcelona.

Casa Batllo

The facade of Casa Batllo on Passeig de Gracia is often described as resembling a dragon's back. Gaudi remodelled the existing building between 1904 and 1906, creating one of the most extraordinary interiors in Europe.

Casa Mila (La Pedrera)

Built between 1906 and 1912, Casa Mila was the last private residence Gaudi designed. The undulating stone facade and the famous rooftop warriors (chimney stacks shaped like armoured soldiers) make it instantly recognisable.

Palau Guell

Built for Gaudi's patron Eusebi Guell in the 1880s, the Palau Guell is the earliest example of Gaudi's mature style. Less visited than his later works, it offers a more intimate experience and excellent value.

Casa Vicens

Often overlooked, Casa Vicens was Gaudi's first major commission (1883) and shows the beginning of his distinctive style. Recently restored and opened to visitors, it is one of the best-kept secrets in Barcelona.

Planning your Gaudi tour

It is impossible to do justice to all seven buildings in one day. Choose two or three and give each one proper time. The Sagrada Familia and Park Guell make an excellent first day; Casa Batllo and Casa Mila a strong second.
